Resveratrol–Procyanidin Supplementation Improves Skin Aging Markers and Reduces Oxidative Stress
Identifier: CCID-S36102
Study Type: Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

---

## Abstract
Skin is constantly exposed to pro‑oxidant environmental stressors, including pollutants, ultraviolet light, and chemical oxidants. Reactive oxygen species contribute to age‑related skin disorders. Dietary antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols have beneficial effects on skin health, and oral delivery provides continuous distribution to all skin compartments. This study evaluated the topical and systemic effects of a dietary supplement containing resveratrol and procyanidin on age‑related skin alterations, the skin antioxidant pool, and systemic oxidative stress. Fifty subjects (25 supplement, 25 placebo) were assessed over 60 days. Supplementation significantly increased systemic antioxidant capacity, reduced oxidative stress markers, and improved skin moisturization, elasticity, roughness, wrinkle depth, and age‑spot intensity. The authors conclude that nutraceutical intervention with resveratrol and procyanidin may support strategies to reduce skin wrinkling and oxidative stress.

- Supplement contained **resveratrol + procyanidin**

### 2. Systemic Oxidative Stress
Supplementation produced significant improvements in:
- Systemic oxidative stress markers
- Plasma antioxidant capacity
- Oxy‑adsorbent activity

Indicates broad systemic reduction in oxidative burden.

### 3. Skin Antioxidant Pool
- Significant increase in skin antioxidant power
- Suggests enhanced local defense against ROS‑driven aging

### 4. Skin Hydration and Elasticity
- Improved skin moisturization
- Increased elasticity
- Indicates healthier extracellular matrix and barrier function

### 5. Skin Roughness and Wrinkle Depth
- Reduced roughness
- Decreased wrinkle depth
- Demonstrates measurable anti‑aging effects on skin texture

### 6. Age Spots / Pigmentation
- Significant reduction in age‑spot intensity
- Improvement in individual typological angle (ITA°)

### 7. Interpretation
The combination of resveratrol and procyanidin produced:
- Systemic antioxidant enhancement
- Local skin antioxidant enhancement
- Visible improvements in multiple markers of skin aging

## Mechanisms of Action

### Antioxidant Activity
Resveratrol and procyanidins reduce ROS, protecting lipids, proteins, and DNA from oxidative damage.

### Collagen and Extracellular Matrix Support
Improved elasticity and reduced wrinkle depth suggest support for collagen integrity and matrix remodeling.

### Barrier and Hydration Effects
Enhanced moisturization indicates improved epidermal barrier function.

### Pigmentation Modulation
Reduced age‑spot intensity suggests antioxidant‑mediated stabilization of melanocyte activity.

### Systemic Delivery Advantage
Oral polyphenols reach:
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous fat

Providing continuous antioxidant support.

## Relevance to Apple Poly Products

### Apple Poly
This study highlights the systemic and skin‑level benefits of polyphenols—specifically **procyanidins**, which are a major component of Apple Poly. The improvements in oxidative stress, antioxidant capacity, skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth align with the biological pathways supported by apple‑derived polyphenols. Apple Poly provides concentrated procyanidins similar to those used in this study, supporting the same categories of antioxidant and skin‑health mechanisms.

## Conclusion
This randomized, placebo‑controlled clinical trial demonstrates that a nutraceutical containing resveratrol and procyanidin significantly improves systemic oxidative stress markers and multiple visible signs of skin aging. Benefits include increased antioxidant capacity, improved hydration and elasticity, reduced roughness and wrinkle depth, and decreased age‑spot intensity. These findings support the role of polyphenol‑based supplementation as a promising strategy for skin health and age‑related oxidative stress reduction.
