The baby was dying.

I remember my father crying exactly twice in the 45 years that I knew him. 

Once was when he and my mom divorced. The other was when he told me the story of holding my infant body in his arms, agonized, because he didn't think I was going to make it.

They took me to doctor after doctor. Nothing helped, he said. I just got skinnier. I cried all the time.

And then...a miracle.

At his wit's end, desperate to try anything, my father found an old retired country doctor. 

The doc took one look at me, and said the five words that saved my life:

One day, after several years of independent study, Katrina found a short article about lab rats losing large amounts of organ fat when taking a nutrient we’d never heard of: apple polyphenols.
